Iowa's Defense of Marriage Act
Governor Mitt Romney On Iowa's Defense Of Marriage Act
Boston, MA – Today, Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on the court decision striking down Iowa's Defense of Marriage Act: "The ruling in Iowa today is another example of an activist court and unelected judges trying to redefine marriage and disregard the will of the people as expressed through Iowa's Defense of Marriage Act. This once again highlights the need for a Federal Marriage Amendment to protect the traditional definition of marriage as between one man and one woman."

Create Your Own Romney Ad Contest
Romney For President Launches Unprecedented "Create Your Own Ad" Contest
Boston, MA – Today, Romney for President announced the "Team Mitt: Create Your Own Ad!" contest, an unprecedented initiative to create the campaign's new television advertisement by empowering grassroots supporters of Governor Mitt Romney. The winner of the contest will become the first amateur ever to have his or her work used as an official television advertisement for a presidential campaign.
By partnering with Yahoo! and Jumpcut.com, supporters from across the country will be able to utilize an innovative video editing platform to create their own ad by remixing or "mashing up" a large variety of the campaign's photos, videos and audio clips, as well as their own multimedia content.
After the contest's submission period ends on September 17, the campaign will conduct online voting at MittRomney.com to help select the winner of the contest. The ad will air in conjunction with the campaign's massive grassroots event, "Rally for Romney," during the week of September 20.
Alex Castellanos, Senior Adviser and media strategist to Governor Romney, said, "It is truly groundbreaking for amateur, grassroots supporters to so directly assist in introducing their candidate to the American people. This contest demonstrates Romney for President's commitment to using unique and democratizing online tools to engage voters and harness the extraordinary enthusiasm of its growing team of supporters."

I'm not LDS. In fact, I'm not religious at all, but I find it amusing to watch more traditional religions pretend that the Latter Day Saints aren't mainstream.

Romney's Health Plan Goes National
"Dr. Romney Goes National"
National Review Online
Commentary From The Heritage Foundation's Robert E. Moffit:
"Romney's health-care-reform proposal is a refreshing reaffirmation of federalism. At the federal level, he proposes a universal tax deduction for all health-care expenses. Every person would be able to get the same federal tax deduction for health insurance, for example, regardless of where they got it; health insurance would then be personal and individuals would be able to carry their health insurance from job to job. Romney would also strengthen health savings accounts by eliminating today's minimum deductible requirement.
"These are major and welcome changes. But the real heavy lifting would be up to the states. The Romney plan provides federal incentives for states to reform their insurance markets in ways that would reduce premium costs and expand private coverage options for consumers. "He leaves it to the states to determine how best to work out all the mind-numbing details, ranging from creating new risk pooling arrangements to drafting new underwriting rules. But under the plan, state officials would 'earn' federal funds to help low income people get private coverage by making their insurance markets more affordable and consumer-friendly.
"Romney's got this exactly right: Essentially, he's using existing government funds to do get the uninsured out of the hospital emergency rooms and into private health plans. "Romney's national tax reform proposal would unify the tax treatment of health care for every American, while his encouragement of innovative state officials would respect the diversity of the states. After all, what works best for Massachusetts may not work well for Mississippi." Robert E. Moffit is director of the Center for Health Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation.

Josh Romney Campaigning in Arizona
In the News
By: Paul Giblin
East Valley Tribune
"Unlike the elder Romney's two previous national fundraising efforts that targeted high-rollers, the next one is geared exclusively for low-rollers."
'This is more of a grassroots effort to get as many people as possible excited and involved in the campaign,' Josh Romney said Wednesday. 'It's a way to for people who wouldn't normally be able to participate, because a lot of the events are really expensive, to become involved and participate.'
"The goal of the initiative, which is called 'Rally for Romney,' is to recruit community captains, who will try to raise $1,000 each, a few dollars at a time, by Sept. 25, when rallies will be held in more than 40 cities in 20 states.
"Until then, the national campaign will stage Web-based events featuring the former governor of Massachusetts in support of the drive, said Romney, 32, a Salt Lake City real estate developer who joined his father's campaign full time in mid-June." ...
"'We've done great in Arizona. We've got some great people supporting us here,' said Josh Romney, the third of five sons in the Romney family." ...

"September Dawn" (Subtitle: Unsubtle Sabotage)
by Rev. Brian Eenigenburg
The movie "September Dawn" was created to ignite and fan fires of hatred against the LDS or Mormon church, and of course by extension against the Presidential candidacy of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, LDS church - a Mormon.
"September Dawn" masquerades as a love story but was written and produced to stir judgmentalism, hatred and revenge. The film pretends to expose covered-up facts about an actual historical massacre carried out by Mormons. But it only presents one viewpoint, the version dreamed up by the vengeful and hateful who insist on never forgiving. The movie is an attempt to "get even" by wiping out Mitt Romney's chances of being President of the United States.
But let's look at who is being massacred? Mitt Romney is highly spiritual, as clean and reverent as the best of Christian ministers in every way, and more qualified than any other candidate on the scene to be President of the United States ... true or false? Since Romney cannot be attacked personally other than to label him "too good," or "too perfect," the haters have no choice but to paint his religion as evil ... true or false? Mitt Romney's Rally America!

Who is behind this film's vicious attempt to annihilate Romney's chances? Please don't dismiss it with a wave of the hand and a statement like, "It's just politics! It's something you'd expect from Hillary Clinton." Behind this film is a dark level of consciousness which Hillary, tough as she is, could never bring herself to.
All Christians and well-meaning people everywhere who don't like the feeling of hatred and who like the feeling of standing for what is right should join with Governor Romney and say "No!" to the intent of Christopher Cain (this film's writer, director, and producer) ... and "No!" to the enormous hate and vengeance being fostered by left-wing politics.
"Well, it's okay to paint Mormons as beasts!" No, it's not okay. Because if you allow it, your non-Mormon religious leaders will be next. Or any righteous men and women who feel a calling to work for good in politics will be next. Or, maybe, you personally will be next.
"September Dawn" is more than propaganda. It is poisonous propaganda disguised as so-called "innocent" historical question asking.

PRESS RELEASE
Boston, MA - Today, Romney for President announced the launch of "Rally for Romney," a new nationwide grassroots fundraising initiative designed to mobilize and empower volunteers across the country to build support at the grassroots level.
The goal of Rally for Romney is to empower grassroots activists nationwide to reach out to friends and family that are not yet supporting Governor Romney's campaign and turn them into active supporters.
Rally for Romney recruitment begins today in more than 40 cities, in 20 states, culminating with rallies and Call Days in those cities and states at the end of September.

The team will set a fundraising goal and work together to meet the goal before the Rally in their city. Recruitment for team captains and team members begin today.
Romney for President Finance Director Spencer Zwick said, "Rally for Romney will help us continue to raise the resources we need to compete nationwide, and it also gives people the opportunity to show their support of Governor Romney and his message of conservative change in Washington."
Romney for President Political Director Carl Forti said, "The launch of Rally for Romney is just the latest effort that Governor Romney's campaign has undertaken to mobilize and energize supporters in new and innovative ways. Rally for Romney will help us reach out to more voters and engage them in Governor Romney's campaign at a grassroots level."

New Romney Ad Targets Illegal Migrants
CONCORD, N.H. - Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney criticizes "sanctuary cities" for illegal immigrants — and by implication Republican rival Rudy Giuliani — in a new radio ad.
Romney and Giuliani have jabbed over illegal immigration in recent weeks. The former Massachusetts governor says Giuliani promoted New York as a haven for illegal immigrants when he was mayor. Giuliani aggressively denies it, insisting he cracked down on lawlessness of every kind.
"Legal immigration is great," Romney says in the new ad. "But illegal immigration, that we've got to end. And amnesty is not the way to do it."
In so-called sanctuary cities, government employees are not required to report illegal immigrants to federal authorities. Some, such as San Francisco, have declared themselves sanctuaries or refuges. Others, like New York, have never adopted the name.
New York's policy, begun by Democratic Mayor Ed Koch in 1988, is intended to make illegal immigrants feel that they can report crimes, send their children to school or seek medical treatment without fear of being reported. An estimated half-million illegal immigrants live in New York, and only a fraction are deported each year.
Romney has pledged to cut federal funds from cities that adopt what he calls sanctuary policies and ignore federal immigration laws. The ads also say that as governor Romney ordered state police to enforce existing immigration laws, opposed driver's licenses for illegal immigrants and insisted children be taught English.
Last week, Giuliani began running a radio ad that highlights his support for building a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border. He says that as mayor he unsuccessfully tried to get federal help to deport illegal immigrants convicted of crimes. He also tells voters that as president he would require new immigrants to learn English, deport criminal suspects and enact tougher visa standards.

Enforcing Our Immigration Laws

By: Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX)
Townhall
"For far too long, too many have spoken out on the problem of illegal immigration but done too little. The laws we need to combat illegal immigration are on the books in this country, and they are pretty clear. However, these laws only work if they are enforced across all levels of government - federal, state and local. If we are to end illegal immigration, we must establish the rule of law and enforce the current laws. "That is why the practice of creating sanctuary policies in places like New York City is so troubling. 'Sanctuary cities' tell those who are here illegally that the laws of this country do not matter. Sanctuary policies create virtual amnesty zones for illegal immigrants." ...
"The policies that were implemented and embraced by mayors in places like New York City severely undermined the enforcement of our immigration laws and weakened our ability to secure our nation's borders. The public officials who openly advocated the creation of 'zones of protection' for lawbreakers are responsible for contributing to a flood of illegal immigrants in this country today. These policies have created an even bigger illegal immigration problem. "Governor Romney believes we need to end sanctuary policies. As President, Governor Romney will crack down on these sanctuary policies and will withhold federal funds that go to these cities." ...
"On this issue, records are important. They provide a critical insight into what a candidate will do once elected to public office. On enforcing our immigration laws, Governor Romney is tested and proven. In 2006, he signed an agreement with the federal government to deputize Massachusetts State Troopers so they could help enforce immigration laws." ...
"However, that is not the end to Governor Romney's record of enforcing our immigration laws. He authorized Massachusetts National Guardsmen to deploy to the Southern Border. In 2004, Governor Romney vetoed a plan that would have provided illegal immigrants the same in-state tuition at public colleges and universities as Massachusetts citizens. In 2003, he announced his opposition to efforts to give drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants, again upholding the rule of law." ...
"Governor Romney's record is a proven record of action."...

Romney Week in Review
After attending 310 events, conducting 53 "Ask Mitt Anythings," and spending 43 days in Iowa, Governor Mitt Romney overwhelmingly won the Ames Straw Poll with 31.5% of the vote.
If you weren't able to make it out to the Hawkeye State on Saturday, watch "Change Begins in Iowa," a new video on Mitt TV about the straw poll, or browse through dozens of great photos from the festivities.
The victory in Iowa has caused surging traffic to MittRomney.com, record sign-ups for Team Mitt, and tremendous buzz in the blogosphere. Indeed, according to the US News & World Report, Governor Romney was the second most blogged about person the day after his big win - falling only behind Harry Potter!
Among those blogging at RedState.com was Doug Gross, the campaign's State Chair of Iowa. Gross wrote: "The road to the Iowa Caucuses begins at Ames, and the Straw Poll is an important indication of a campaign’s ability to organize and mobilize supporters. The Ames Straw Poll is essentially a dress rehearsal for the Caucuses. Judging by the results, our organization was tested and proven and emerged as the strongest statewide campaign. Indeed, our strength alone forced several candidates to come to the realization months before any barbeque was served that they could not compete. Saturday's victory sends an important signal to grassroots Republican activists – the Romney campaign is ready to compete."
Finally, Mrs. Romney sat down with ABC's "Nightline" to discuss her travels on the campaign trail, her five sons and ten grandchildren, and her struggles with multiple sclerosis.

Romney Wins in Illinois
(CNN)–Mitt Romney added another straw poll victory to his resume Thursday.
Illinois state Republican party chairman, Andy McKenna, said Romney won the Illinois Straw poll at the Illinois State Fair. "Congratulations to Mitt Romney, whose strong showing today indicates he has begun to put together a strong statewide organization," McKenna said. "There's no question that Illinois' demographics closely match those of the United States and this could be an indication as to whom Illinois voters are leaning toward this coming February."
Romney secured an overwhelming victory with 40.35 percent of the vote. Former Senator Fred Thompson, who is expected to formally enter the race for the GOP nomination next month, came in second with 19.96 percent of the vote.
The Illinois Republican party sponsored the straw poll during its Republican Day festivities at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.
To be included, participate candidates were required to have participated in one of the previously held debates with other Republican candidates, or have polled above 5 percent in a national, independent poll.
Final results of Thursday's Illinois straw poll:
1. Mitt Romney – 40.35%
2. Fred Thompson – 19.96%
3. Ron Paul – 18.87%
4. Rudy Giuliani – 11.61%
5. John McCain – 4.12%
6. Mike Huckabee – 3.04%
7. Sam Brownback – 1.08%
8. Duncan Hunter - .65%
9. Tom Tancredo - .33%

A Family Affair

In the News
The Romney Campaign: It's All In The Family
By: Ron Claiborne
ABC News
"Josh Romney is tired.
"For most of the last four months, he has lived in a Winnebago – dubbed the Mitt Mobile – stopping at least once in every one of Iowa's 99 counties, campaigning on behalf of his father, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
"Now he can rest – for a while. Romney won the crucial Iowa Straw Poll this weekend, and the Mitt Mobile is temporarily idle, parked next to a hotel in Ames. Josh can take a day off, maybe two. But soon, he will be back in the super-sized camper, and off to Nevada, or maybe Florida, or perhaps, New Hampshire. And so it will go for at least the next six months, and maybe the next 15 months.
"Josh, 31, is one of Romney's five sons, four of whom are regularly out on the campaign trail."
...
"When Romney stresses 'the family' as one leg in the three-legged stool that is his analogy for his main campaign themes (the other legs are the military and the economy), he can back it up by producing his own nuclear family, including his adult sons and Ann Romney, his wife of 38 years."
...
"For the Romney brothers, it means a lot of time on the road away from home, friends, and often family.
"'It's not easy, but it's well worth it,' said Craig Romney, 26, who lives in New York City. 'I'm willing to do whatever I can to help get my dad elected.'
"'I tried to convince them not to do it,' Mitt Romney told me during a campaign stop in Hampton, Iowa. 'I said, "you've got your lives, you've got your families." They said, "Dad, you're running for president of the United States. We want to help you. We want to be part of it." It's a very moving thing, very humbling.'
"Two other sons, Tagg, 37, and Matt, 35, are also frequently campaigning on the road. Tagg is a top campaign advisor in the campaign's Boston headquarters."
...
"Ben Romney, a medical student in the Boston area, campaigns infrequently because of school. He did fly in to Iowa for the Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 11, a rare reunion of the entire clan. In fact, with five brothers spread across the map, they say the campaign has actually brought them together more often.
"'We get together now as a family more than we did before,' said Matt, a commercial real estate developer in San Diego. 'So, honestly, it's a lot of fun to get together and share this experience.'"
...
"The five brothers have a personal blog on the Romney campaign Web site, which contains their observations, reflections and musing from the campaign trail. None of them is quite sure who's idea it was."
...
"The Romneys admit the prospect of possibly spending the next 15 months campaigning is daunting. And if, after all the time and effort and energy, their father doesn't win?
"'It would be crushing to me if he didn't make it all the way,' Craig said. 'but I'll love my dad all the same.'"

Update from Ames Straw Poll
Update from Tagg Romney on the Five Brothers blog:
An Update From Ames
We are all at the straw poll together in Ames Iowa. Apart from the blistering heat, things are going well. We have 96 relatives here from all around the country, and at least 250 volunteers who are all working hard manning the buses and directing people where to go. Everyone who comes on a Romney bus gets a yellow Romney t-shirt and as a result there is a massive sea of yellow all over the Iowa State campus. Everywhere you look there are people dressed in yellow. Its touching and exciting and we are anxious to see the results of the poll tonight. The road to the White House starts here in Ames today. ~ Tagg Romney
