fund raising and spent time with some of the locals at the Hires Big H, one of his favorite drive-ins in SLC. Romney loved the Big H restaurant during his days of managing and making a success of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City just a few months following Sept. 11, 2001.

The president is missing the long-term effects of his policies

"President Barack Obama’s actions on the economy have had the opposite effect than what was intended. His address to Congress was meant to restore confidence; instead, consumers retreated and investors sold.

His Treasury Secretary’s bank plan was meant to settle uncertainty; instead it added to it. Every speech, every interview, and every initiative has caused investors in America to recoil.

With consumer confidence plummeting to its lowest level in history and the stock market falling 20% since his taking office, it’s clear that something is wrong.

I believe it is that so far, Barack Obama has focused on the short term, on what I refer to as the first order effects of his policies. That initially plays well with some in the media and with the public at large. But investors are looking to see what the impact will be down the road. They don’t like what they see. President Obama’s economic policies fail to take into account second and third order effects.

In the president’s first address to Congress, he announced plans for a trillion-dollar health care plan and to take responsibility for a child from birth to its first job—universal healthcare, universal pre-school and universal higher education. To a lot of people, that sounds pretty good.

But look at the consequences: a budget that grows discretionary spending by a whopping 12%, that produces trillion-dollar deficits and that means much more borrowing from the Chinese and others. We may be approaching the tipping point where people who are lending us all that money will begin to worry about what the dollar will be worth in the future.
President Obama’s excessive spending and borrowing could precipitate a crisis of confidence in our currency and lead to hyper-inflation, evaporating what is left of family savings and wiping out the middle class.

The President’s cap-and-trade plan also ignores second order effects. By placing a trillion dollar energy burden on companies that do business here and without requiring China and India and others to sign on, energy-intensive companies will move.

Emissions will grow in China even as they decline—along with jobs—here in the US. Even those who are worried about carbon emissions don’t call it America warming—they call it global warming.

The President’s corporate tax plan makes the same error. He proposes to tax multi-national companies that “export jobs to other countries.” Sounds good on the surface.

But American companies that have subsidiaries doing business in other countries already pay taxes there; making them pay higher US taxes will make them uncompetitive in those markets and cost jobs here. And the multinationals themselves will simply relocate outside the US. The result will not be more jobs and more tax revenue as the President claims, but less.

The administration intends to sharply raise taxes on all investment income: interest, dividends and capital gains. But the pool of risk capital that finances new jobs and new businesses has already been shrunk by trillions of dollars; raising the tax on investment will shrink it further, depress job creation and result in less government revenue.

Even the President’s mortgage plan fails to adequately consider its long term consequences. By requiring investors and lenders to reduce the principal amount of their loan and by enabling bankruptcy judges to re-write mortgages, investors in the future will demand higher mortgage interest rates to compensate for their higher risk. Housing will suffer, as will responsible borrowers.

Perhaps the most disconcerting aspect of the President’s proposals is that they appear to be taking America down the very path of big government, big spending and big borrowing that got us in so much trouble in the first place.

By ignoring the second order consequences of his policies, the President is deepening and lengthening this recession. He inherited a recession, yes, but he is making it worse.

There is still time to limit the damage caused by the President’s policies. Republicans and “blue dog” Democrats need to insist on fiscal discipline. Expanding health insurance and improving education can be achieved without massive new federal spending.

Taxes should not be raised. Energy policy must not penalize America. Entitlements must be reformed. And a half a trillion dollar deficit in four years, which rises every year thereafter, must be rejected. It is unacceptable as a budget; it is unthinkable as a goal.

In times like these, America needs leaders with vision—men and women who see beyond the immediate, who understand and appreciate the importance of looking beyond today’s horizon.

President Obama has the opportunity to be that kind of leader. But that will only happen if he and his administration put aside their nearsighted, liberal agenda and focus on America’s future."

Today there is a complete lack of adult economic leadership in Washington. President Obama’s agenda on health care, higher education, and climate change is diverting his attention from the economy. Congressional Republicans are proposing austerity-oriented “spending freezes” and railing against “big bank bailouts” instead of articulating a pro-growth message and policy agenda.

The GOP — and the country — needs Gov. Mitt Romney’s voice front and center in the economic debate. His private-sector experience as a chief executive officer, his record as a turnaround artist, and his expertise on economic and financial matters are head and shoulders above those of any current Republican or Democratic political figure.

Here are some more of the benefits Romney could bring:

— Governor Romney is ahead of the curve in terms of modernizing our economic message. For instance, on regulation, Romney says: “Republicans believe in regulation. You can’t have a free market with people stealing intellectual property from one another, with monopolies being formed, we believe in law and regulation that sets rules for markets. . . . Do we need new regulations? Absolutely. Should regulators be looking at the market in a different way than they did 25 years ago? Certainly.”

— Romney has demonstrated his ability to craft innovative policy solutions. Last year, he put forth a proposal to create a public-private cooperative that would receive troubled bank assets, then renegotiate loans to homeowners and businesses to keep them performing. The income from the performing loans would then go to the owners of the troubled assets, thereby allowing them to recoup some of their losses.

— Romney has raised some legitimate concerns about the efficacy of “mark to market” accounting, the inside-the-Beltway think tanks’ favorite cure-all for the banking crisis. He said, “I do believe you need to somewhere recognize if you have a toxic asset and present that to stakeholders. Japan took the other route . . . and we have learned from that experience that if you try and hide the extent of the problem, you may not be willing to deal with it.”

— As a Michigan-born son of an auto executive, Romney is uniquely positioned to address the economic fallout that is occurring in the Industrial Midwest. Romney has been a trendsetter in calling for investment in new technologies that will modernize and preserve an industrial base in the country. The GOP has been hemorrhaging support in the Industrial Midwest because its leaders are tone deaf on the economic anxieties of blue- and white-collar workers in states like Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

— Romney can be a credible voice on the intersection of education and economic competitiveness. He is well versed in the economic challenges presented to our country by a rising China. Romney and the Republican party should lead a national call to bolster our teaching of math and science. This is crucial issue to our long-term competitiveness.

Looking backward, it should have been Romney, not Gov. Bobby Jindal, offering the official GOP response to President Obama’s address. And going forward, Romney should be the GOP’s go-to economic spokesman for media interviews. He ought to give a series of speeches on how to turn around the economy. He should lead an economic task force made of elder statesmen, prominent business executives, global-finance experts, and Nobel Prize winning economists to develop economic policy solutions, with a focus on fixing the banking system.

In the presidential primaries, Mitt Romney’s PowerPoint presentations did not connect to average Americans. But with the economy and stock market collapsing, he could find a much more receptive audience.

"Mitt Romney spent over $35 million of his own money and more than a year of his life on a bid for the presidency that fell short and ended abruptly. The former Massachusetts governor is not one to wallow in failure, but even for the incurably optimistic Romney, portraying his unsuccessful run in a positive light would seem an impossible task. Still, he manages.

"In some respects it's ideal," Romney said only half-jokingly as he sat down for an exclusive national interview with CBSNews.com before addressing the crowd at the opening of John McCain's Great Lakes regional headquarters. "Get out of the race just before summer so you can spend some time with the family at the beach."

Despite his deep summer tan, Romney has been anything but a beach bum as of late. Since dropping out of the Republican race in February, he has gone from being John McCain's fiercest rival to one of the Arizona senator's most visible surrogates. What was inconceivable during the height of their primary battles, the prospect of a McCain/Romney ticket, is now a real possibility.

The most obvious assets that Romney would bring to the Republican ticket include his economic expertise, fundraising prowess and potential to give McCain a boost in more than one battleground state. But a less talked about plus side to a Romney vice presidential candidacy is that despite his perpetually sunny demeanor, the former Massachusetts governor is not afraid to unleash razor-sharp political attacks against the opposition.

"This is not the time for an amateur," Romney said of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. "This is the time for a tested, proven professional to lead our country." (Watch video of Romney talking about Obama)

Romney brims with confidence and is almost always unflappable. The McCain campaign has taken advantage of Romney's willingness to take the offensive by encouraging him to make TV appearances on the senator's behalf.

The ability to stay on message is an asset for any vice presidential prospect, but that very trait also led to criticisms during Romney's campaign that he could come across as impersonal or robotic.

Asked what his father George, who as Governor of Michigan during the 1960's was a champion of civil rights, would have made of an African-American candidate winning a major party nomination, Romney refused to go off script, even for a moment, to acknowledge Obama's historic achievement.

"I think most Americans do what the Democrats did in their primary, which is they look at the person and say who can be the right leader at a particular point in time, and they make that decision without regard to gender or race or faith," Romney said. "

Romney is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as are more than 60 percent of the state's residents. While McCain raised about $183,000 from Utahns since January 2007, Romney raised millions. Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., who has been the subject of media speculation as a possible McCain running mate, will be in attendance, organizers said. McCain also is holding fundraising events in Colorado and Nevada this week.

"Romney, speaking in his first formal television interview since ending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination last month, told Fox News Channel's Hannity & Colmes that he would be "honored" to be selected as Sen. John McCain's running mate if offered the spot on the ticket.

The Arizona senator locked up the Republican nomination last week, complete with an endorsement from President Bush. McCain and Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who ran the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, waged a sometimes bitter fight for Republican delegates during the first two months of GOP primaries.

"I think any Republican leader in this country would be honored to be asked to serve as the vice presidential nominee, myself included," Romney said Tuesday.

Romney also used the interview to show he isn't shy about attacking the Democratic hopefuls.

Listening to Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton discuss their national security credentials, Romney said, is akin to "listening to two Chihuahuas argue about which is the biggest dog.

"When it comes to national security, John McCain is the big dog, and they are the Chihuahuas," Romney said.
Romney said he expects Obama to eventually emerge as the Democratic nominee, which he thinks is the better matchup for McCain in November.

Talk of Romney being on the short-list of vice presidential picks began soon after he dropped out of the race in a Feb. 7 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. He endorsed McCain on Feb. 14.

Recently, Romney has been mentioned as a potential McCain running mate by former White House deputy chief of staff and adviser Karl Rove and political pundit Bob Novak."

Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister, brought out a surprising number of evangelical voters in Iowa. They weren't voting against a Mormon candidate, Josh Romney said, but he did run into some "pockets of bigotry" occasionally on the campaign trail.
"When it's religion, you definitely take it personally," he said. "It's highly offensive, but I think that the vast majority of people we saw were very accepting. They said, 'Your dad shares our values and we don't care about his religion."'
Only a few times, he said, did he hear voters say they couldn't support a Mormon candidate for president. "I said, 'That's a very un-American thing to say.' I mean, this is a country that based on religious freedom," Josh Romney said.
At the beginning of the campaign, he said, there was much more attention on Mitt Romney's faith, including a Newsweek cover story. "People, when all they knew about my dad was that he was a Mormon, they had a lot of questions about it," Josh Romney said.
That interest had lessened as the campaign season wore on, he said, until Huckabee raised the question of whether Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers during a New York Times interview in December.
That may have hurt his father's campaign, because "it highlighted the fact that his religious views were different" and turned attention back to Mormonism for a few weeks, he said. "It was a smart political move for Gov. Huckabee."

Rep. Jim Matheson - Utah's lone Democrat in Congress - enjoys broad support for his even-handed representation of the sprawling 2nd District.
For that reason, most Republicans consider him almost unbeatable. But if anyone could, they say, its Josh Romney, the third of Mitt and Ann Romney's five sons.
"Josh is incredibly bright, very able," said Kirk Jowers, director of the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics. "He's really learned the art of politics over this last year, campaigning so hard for his father."
Mitt Romney garnered 90 percent of the vote in Utah's recent Republican Presidential primary. Jowers served as an advisor to his now-suspended campaign.
"Josh would be the best candidate we could put forward against Matheson," Jowers said Monday.
According to Don Sterling, advisor to Josh Romney, the young father of three is giving the idea "strong consideration."
"He's weighing his options and not closing any doors," Sterling said. "Josh feels he can be of benefit to the party and the political process here in Utah . . . now or in the future."
If Josh Romney commits to a 2008 run, can he win?
"I think the answer is yes," said Stan Lockhart, chairman of the state Republican Party. "Anybody can beat anybody, depending on the circumstances. It's a long way to
November."
Even so, some see it as a long shot.
"It would be an incredibly difficult campaign for anyone to take on Jim Matheson," Jowers said. "He's proven to be an excellent legislator" - one who has scrapped to gain his status.
Such a run would require "money off the charts and name recognition off the charts," said KSL-Radio host Doug Wright, who seriously considered a race against Matheson himself in 2006.
"There was a better shot at beating Jim Matheson then," Wright said. "This will be an overall tough year. There seems to be a fire under the Democratic Party nationally."
Wayne Holland, chairman of the Utah Democratic Party, agrees that the political climate has changed - a shift he attributes to Republican arrogance at both the state and federal levels.
"It's a good time to be us," Holland said.
"Josh Romney has a political future," he acknowledged. "I can't imagine him challenging Jim Matheson, who has higher approval ratings than any other member of the Congressional delegation."
Matheson, interviewed in Washington, D.C., said he'll campaign hard this year, Romney or no Romney.
"I never run against someone. I always run for election to office. And I always plan for a tough race," Matheson said. "This year is no different."

It's reported that when Mitt Romney was in Utah saving the 2002 Olympics, he was told by then LDS Prophet and President, Gordon B. Hinckley, when asked about his probable run for the U.S. Presidency,

"It will be a blessing if you lose, and it will be a blessing if you win."

I think this might have been a very prophetic message. Mitt Romney will 'lose' and then he will win. So last week, we got past the 'lose' part of the prophecy. Now we can all get busy on the 'win' part of the prophecy, even if it takes four more years. Mitt Romney, the LDS Church and all of his supporters will continue to be blessed, in the meantime!

Mitt Romney WILL have my vote on November 4, 2008.

"Open Letter to Conservative Republicans–

All morning I have been trying to wrap my mind around the political events that unfolded on Super Tuesday, and over the past two weeks. I’ve watched the vehement “moderately liberal” McCain become the vehement “true Conservative” that is proud of his “Conservative Record.” I’ve heard him declare his right and even inevitability to become the Republican nominee and watched/heard him lie about Romney while using Huckabee as a political pawn. I also watched one famous Conservative declare that when it boils down to it, she will rally around and vote for the Republican nominee even if it is McCain–and predicted the rest of us would follow suit.

Really? I cannot agree that a vote for McCain is good for the party much less good for this nation. As a self-declared Conservative, I’ve been trying to evaluate my options. I cannot vote for McCain who obviously wields political tactics that disgust me, nor can I accept the possibility of supporting a vice-president “Christian” who is blatantly intolerant of other religions.

What to do, what to do? Opting out of voting has never sat well with me, un-declaring myself a Republican and becoming an Independent seems rash, voting for a Democrat seems irrational, and as stated above, the thought of voting for McCain is unthinkable.

So, as grass-roots as it sounds, I am going to write-in my vote. I want to be heard, I want to exercise my right to vote, I want to have peace of mind that I did vote for the right candidate. So, Mr. Mitt Romney, Republican Nominee or not, you have my vote on November 4, 2008.

I feel the political strife and burden of Election 2008 lifting already…

Washington, D.C. – Today, addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Governor Romney announced that he was suspending his presidential campaign for the sake of Republican unity and the future of our country. In 2008, Republicans must stand united if we are to prevent Senators Clinton and Obama from taking the White House. As a nation at war and facing uncertain economic times, the American people cannot afford the Democrats and their agenda for retreat and economic slowdown. With today's speech, Governor Romney outlined the significance of this election and the need for the Republican Party to remain strong. Governor Romney's Address To CPAC (As Prepared For Delivery):

"I want to begin by saying thank you. It's great to be with you again. And I look forward to joining with you many more times in the future. "Last year, CPAC gave me the sendoff I needed. I was in single digits in the polls, and I was facing household Republican names. As of today, more than 4 million people have given me their vote for President, less than Senator McCain's 4.7 million, but quite a statement nonetheless. Eleven states have given me their nod, compared to his 13. Of course, because size does matter, he's doing quite a bit better with his number of delegates.

"To all of you, thank you for caring enough about the future of America to show up, stand up and speak up for conservative principles.

"As I said to you last year, conservative principles are needed now more than ever. We face a new generation of challenges, challenges which threaten our prosperity, our security and our future. I am convinced that unless America changes course, we will become the France of the 21st century – still a great nation, but no longer the leader of the world, no longer the superpower. And to me, that is unthinkable. Simon Peres, in a visit to Boston, was asked what he thought about the war in Iraq. 'First,' he said, 'I must put something in context. America is unique in the history of the world. In the history of the world, whenever there has been conflict, the nation that wins takes land from the nation that loses. One nation in history, and this during the last century, laid down hundreds of thousands of lives and took no land. No land from Germany, no land from Japan, no land from Korea. America is unique in the sacrifice it has made for liberty, for itself and for freedom loving people around the world.' The best ally peace has ever known, and will ever know, is a strong America.

"And that is why we must rise to the occasion, as we have always done before, to confront the challenges ahead. Perhaps the most fundamental of these is the attack on the American culture.

"Over the years, my business has taken me to many countries. I have been struck by the enormous differences in the wealth and well-being of people of different nations. I have read a number of scholarly explanations for the disparities. I found the most convincing was that written by David Landes, a professor emeritus from Harvard University. I presume he's a liberal – I guess that's redundant. His work traces the coming and going of great civilizations throughout history. After hundreds of pages of analysis, he concludes with this: "If we learn anything from the history of economic development, it is that culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference.

"What is it about American culture that has led us to become the most powerful nation in the history of the world? We believe in hard work and education. We love opportunity: almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants who came here for opportunity – opportunity is in our DNA. Americans love God, and those who don't have faith, typically believe in something greater than themselves – a 'Purpose Driven Life.' And we sacrifice everything we have, even our lives, for our families, our freedoms and our country. The values and beliefs of the free American people are the source of our nation's strength and they always will be.

"The threat to our culture comes from within. The 1960's welfare programs created a culture of poverty. Some think we won that battle when we reformed welfare, but the liberals haven't given up. At every turn, they try to substitute government largesse for individual responsibility. They fight to strip work requirements from welfare, to put more people on Medicaid, and to remove more and more people from having to pay any income tax whatsoever. Dependency is death to initiative, risk-taking and opportunity. Dependency is a culture-killing drug. We have got to fight it like the poison it is.

"The attack on faith and religion is no less relentless. And tolerance for pornography – even celebration of it – and sexual promiscuity, combined with the twisted incentives of government welfare programs have led to today's grim realities: 68% of African American children are born out-of-wedlock, 45% of Hispanic children, and 25% of White children. How much harder it is for these children to succeed in school and in life. A nation built on the principles of the Founding Fathers cannot long stand when its children are raised without fathers in the home.

"The development of a child is enhanced by having a mother and father. Such a family is the ideal for the future of the child and for the strength of a nation. I wonder how it is that unelected judges, like some in my state of Massachusetts, are so unaware of this reality, so oblivious to the millennia of recorded history. It is time for the people of America to fortify marriage through Constitutional amendment, so that liberal judges cannot continue to attack it.

"Europe is facing a demographic disaster. That is the inevitable product of weakened faith in the Creator, failed families, disrespect for the sanctity of human life and eroded morality. Some reason that culture is merely an accessory to America's vitality; we know that it is the source of our strength. And we are not dissuaded by the snickers and knowing glances when we stand up for family values, and morality, and culture. We will always be honored to stand on principle and to stand for principle.

"The attack on our culture is not our sole challenge. We face economic competition unlike anything we have ever known before. China and Asia are emerging from centuries of poverty. Their people are plentiful, innovative and ambitious. If we do not change course, Asia or China will pass us by as the economic superpower, just as we passed England and France during the last century. The prosperity and security of our children and grandchildren depend on us.

"Our prosperity and security also depend on finally acting to become energy secure. Oil producing states like Russia and Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Iran are siphoning over $400 billion per year from our economy – that's almost what we spend annually for defense. It is past time for us to invest in energy technology, nuclear power, clean coal, liquid coal, renewable sources and energy efficiency. America must never be held hostage by the likes of Putin, Chavez, and Ahmadinejad.

"And our economy is also burdened by the inexorable ramping of government spending. Don't focus on the pork alone – even though it is indeed irritating and shameful. Look at the entitlements. They make up 60% of federal spending today. By the end of the next President's second term, they will total 70%. Any conservative plan for the future has to include entitlement reform that solves the problem, not just acknowledges it.

"Most politicians don't seem to understand the connection between our ability to compete and our national wealth, and the wealth of our families. They act as if money just happens – that it's just there. But every dollar represents a good or service produced in the private sector. Depress the private sector and you depress the well-being of Americans.

"That's exactly what happens with high taxes, over-regulation, tort windfalls, mandates, and overfed, over-spending government. Did you see that today, government workers make more money than people who work in the private sector? Can you imagine what happens to an economy where the best opportunities are for bureaucrats?

"It's high time to lower taxes, including corporate taxes, to take a weed-whacker to government regulations, to reform entitlements, and to stand up to the increasingly voracious appetite of the unions in our government.

"And finally, let's consider the greatest challenge facing America – and facing the entire civilized world: the threat of violent, radical Jihad. In one wing of the world of Islam, there is a conviction that all governments should be destroyed and replaced by a religious caliphate. These Jihadists will battle any form of democracy. To them, democracy is blasphemous for it says that citizens, not God shape the law. They find the idea of human equality to be offensive. They hate everything we believe about freedom just as we hate everything they believe about radical Jihad.

"To battle this threat, we have sent the most courageous and brave soldiers in the world. But their numbers have been depleted by the Clinton years when troops were reduced by 500,000, when 80 ships were retired from the Navy, and when our human intelligence was slashed by 25%. We were told that we were getting a peace dividend. We got the dividend, but we didn't get the peace. In the face of evil in radical Jihad and given the inevitable military ambitions of China, we must act to rebuild our military might – raise military spending to 4% of our GDP, purchase the most modern armament, re-shape our fighting forces for the asymmetric demands we now face, and give the veterans the care they deserve.

"Soon, the face of liberalism in America will have a new name. Whether it is Barack or Hillary, the result would be the same if they were to win the Presidency. The opponents of American culture would push the throttle, devising new justifications for judges to depart from the Constitution. Economic neophytes would layer heavier and heavier burdens on employers and families, slowing our economy and opening the way for foreign competition to further erode our lead.

"Even though we face an uphill fight, I know that many in this room are fully behind my campaign. You are with me all the way to the convention. Fight on, just like Ronald Reagan did in 1976. But there is an important difference from 1976: today, we are a nation at war.

"And Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear regarding Iraq and the war on terror. They would retreat and declare defeat. And the consequence of that would be devastating. It would mean attacks on America, launched from safe havens that make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like child's play. About this, I have no doubt. "I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. One Candidate Now Stands for All Three Legs of Conservatism

RUSH: I want to clarify something that I said in the last hour. I had a caller who was talking about the three legs of the conservative stool, and I said that one of the reasons why voters on our side are going to three or four different candidates is because not one candidate embodies all three legs of the stool. The more accurate way to have stated that was that at the outset of our campaign, there wasn't one who had all three legs. Well, there was one. Fred Thompson did, but he was never really a factor, for reasons we can only guess about. But after that, Romney, McCain, Huckabee, Ron Paul; each one of these guys had a strength on one of those legs of the stool, and so our guys, our side, went off on their single-issue preferences.
I think now, based on the way the campaign has shaken out, that there probably is a candidate on our side who does embody all three legs of the conservative stool, and that's Romney. The three stools or the three legs of the stool are national security/foreign policy, the social conservatives, and the fiscal conservatives. The social conservatives are the cultural people. The fiscal conservatives are the economic crowd: low taxes, smaller government, get out of the way.

Of course, the foreign policy crowd is obviously what it is. I don't think there's anybody on our side who doesn't care about national security, which is why I found it amazing that McCain gets the bulk of those, because the idea that Romney or Huckabee are going to punt national security? In Huckabee's case, you might just say the things he's saying about it represent an ignorance born of inexperience in the subject. I don't think Huckabee has any deleterious intentions about the country. When it comes to the fiscal side, you cannot say -- you just cannot say -- that John McCain is interested. He's even admitted he's not interested in the social side. He's not interested in the economic side. He said this, and when he has spoken up about it, he sides more often with liberal Democrats on fiscal issues than he does with his own side. That's problematic. This is why I think -- and why I have said -- that the Republican Party, not conservatism, but the Republican Party is in big trouble if it is empowered and gets elected by attracting people who also hold liberal Democrat views simply because they like McCain because of his character, his honor, his prisoner of war story, and they don't like Hillary or Obama.

Now, I'm going to just tell you, folks. If the Republican Party grows and spans by attracting liberals as liberals -- and if we grow and expand because we have a candidate who's going out trying to attract liberals by being like them -- then the party's going to be around, but you won't recognize it. It's going to be over as it exists now, if that becomes the reality. "Look at how McCain won. Why, he got liberals and liberal independents!" Yeah, look at how he won! He ran as a liberal and won as a liberal. That's really great for the Republican Party, right? So my take is, speaking for myself, I'm being honest here. All I do is tell you what I think. What you do with it is up to you. You are not mind-numbed robots, as you know. I'm not a Svengali, I'm not a pied piper, and you're not lemmings running off the cliff. If I look at this roster of three candidates -- if I look at Hillary-Obama, about whom there's not a dime's worth of difference, because they're so far left it doesn't matter which one of them wins. If McCain adopts economic policies that sound very much like what you'd get from Hillary-Obama, and if I think those policies are going to take the country down the tubes I'd just as soon the Democrats take the hit for it, not us. Plain and simple.

I think that's pretty wise. I think right now Romney probably -- as the campaign has coalesced and as the campaign has progressed on down the highway -- I think the one candidate of the three still out there on our side that matter (and, actually, it's just two, because Huckabee doesn't, in terms of a chance to win) in saying who more closely embodies all three legs of this conservative stool, you'd have to say that it's Mitt Romney. There's actually no choice in the matter. It certainly isn't Senator McCain.

"It is a vision that calls for empowering the American people through conservative change in Washington. From Dearborn to Des Moines to Jacksonville, Mr. Romney has articulated the conservative vision and the conservative policies needed to make America strong again.

"Mr. Romney is ready to meet the call for action. America is the greatest nation on Earth. But there are other places as well. UPDATE: Ed Morrissey --perhaps the most widely liked and respected center-right blogger-- endorses Romney. A very interesting read because I suspect Ed's analysis and decision is being replicated among Republicans across the country who are now obliged to get down off the fence and vote.

Republicans should also be watching to see if Teddy endorses Senator Obama, a potentially stunning development that, if it goes from strong rumor to fact, (UPDATE: it is now fact) may shake up the Democratic race from top to bottom. If that comes to pass the GOP will have to understand that sending an aging John McCain and a divided base to do battle with a brand new, post-partisan Obama would probably lead to a far worse result than the '96 blowout which featured another GOP Beltway insider and war hero. The idea of three debates between Senators McCain and Obama is not a hopeful one for conservatives who understand the stakes for the country.

"Since day one of his campaign, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney made it clear that complacency about our economy was not on his agenda by becoming the first candidate to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. He has continued to outline substantive ways to sustain economic growth and prevent a recession, including making the Bush tax cuts permanent, reducing marginal tax rates for all Americans, providing relief from the Alternative Minimum Tax, permanently killing the death tax, and rejecting Social Security tax-rate increases.

"However, with economic and financial conditions apparently worsening, Romney believes Washington must act now. He has proposed a bold economic stimulus plan that would immediately help restore consumer and business confidence while providing new incentives to improve productivity and strengthen economic growth and America?s global competitiveness in the long term. Specifically, Romney is proposing a supply-side economic turnaround plan that would lower rates taxes on individuals, abolish taxes on saving and investment for middle-income investors, and significantly reduce taxes for business investment. The plan includes several core elements.

"For individuals, it would permanently reduce the lowest tax rate from 10 percent to 7.5 percent, providing up to a $400 tax cut for those affected. It would also eliminate payroll taxes on workers older than 65."

"Additionally, the plan will allow Americans with adjusted gross incomes of less than $200,000 to save tax-free, by eliminating their tax liability on interest, capital gains, and dividends."

"For businesses large and small, the plan would provide new incentives for job-creating investment. Companies could immediately write off or expense the cost of new equipment purchased for a two-year period, retroactive to January 1, 2008, making them more likely to invest in such equipment. This would boost economic growth, create jobs, and benefit entrepreneurs and small businesses, which often face cash-flow difficulties.

"Romney proposes to permanently reduce the corporate rate to 25 percent for 2008 and 20 percent in 2009. Today, at 35 percent, the U.S. corporate rate is the second among major industrialized countries."

· In This Uncertain Economic Environment, More And More Seniors Are Returning To The Workforce. Governor Romney's proposal will provide an immediate tax cut to working seniors.

· Governor Romney Believes That Seniors Have Already Earned Their Full Social Security Benefit And Should Not Owe Additional Payroll Taxes For Income Earned After Age 65.

Make Middle-Class Savings Tax Free. Governor Romney's plan will allow middle class Americans to save tax free by changing the tax rate on interest, capital gains and dividends to absolutely 0%. By helping more Americans save and invest, we can meet the challenges of an aging population and ensure the financial security of America .

· Allow Over 95% Of American Families To Save And Invest Tax Free: Any taxpayer with Adjusted Gross Income under $200,000 would pay a tax rate of absolutely 0% on all of the income they earn from their savings, capital gains and dividends.

· Expand The Investor Class: In recent years, over half of adult Americans have participated in the stock market either directly or through pension plans and mutual funds. Tax-free savings will encourage more families to build wealth by saving, investing and participating in the stock market, which will help grow the economy.

BUSINESSES: Governor Romney's Economic Stimulus Plan – Pro-Growth Tax Cuts For Businesses:

Institute Immediate 100% Expensing Of New Equipment Purchased By A Business For A Two-Year Period Retroactive To January 1, 2008. This plan would allow both large and small businesses to immediately invest in new equipment and capital improvements, which would immediately stimulate the economy and create new jobs.

· Boost U.S. Manufacturers And Vendors: Accelerating and increasing capital investment in equipment and other qualified assets in the U.S. will immediately provide a boost to U.S. manufacturers and vendors.

· Encourage Additional Business Investment: Entrepreneurs and small businesses, such as S corps and LLCs, which often face cash flow difficulties, will benefit greatly by the reduced cost of investment in equipment under this plan. Additional investment and expansion by these growing businesses will drive economic growth.

Reduce The Corporate Tax Rate To 20% Over Two Years. Governor Romney believes we should immediately act to reduce the corporate rate to 25% for 2008 and 20% in 2009. A permanent U.S. corporate tax rate of 20% will attract capital, stimulate investment, and increase American competitiveness with the rapidly growing economies of the world.

· A More Competitive Corporate Tax Rate: Governor Romney has spoken throughout the campaign about the need to reduce our corporate income tax rate in order to compete more effectively against other countries with lower rates. The United States currently has the second-highest corporate tax rate in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

· Encourage New Capital Flows Into The United States : Cutting the corporate tax rate will cause new capital to flow to the U.S. and make our U.S. companies more competitive by providing additional funds for research, development, innovation, and hiring of additional employees.

HOMEOWNERS: Governor Romney's Economic Stimulus Plan – Helping Homeowners:

Reform And Expand Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Loan Portfolio Limits:

"Wearing no tie and no jacket, Romney appeared more casual than usual as he spoke to a crowd of about 400 at USC's Russell House on his plans to strengthen the economy, bolster the military by 100,000 troops and lower taxes for the middle class.

"An estimated 100 more were not allowed into the ballroom because of fire codes, according to Romney's campaign.

"'What I've heard is Washington is broken,' Romney said. 'Together we will fix things.'"
